The ITU is attached to the diagnostic port of the satellite receiver (integrated receiver/decoder, IRD) and the communication medium (typically a 10 Base T Ethernet). It will convert diagnostic data received after interrogation from the IRD to Ethernet packets for transmission to the Help Desk or Customer Service application. Similarly commands received from the Customer Service Center are received and converted to the correct format for application to the IRD.
ChannelScan is a feature option which permits a user of an ITU equipped network to obtain near real time audience data displayed as channel numbers vs total viewership.
